Obituary for Ted Raymond Norton Jr.

Ted Raymond Norton, Jr., 71, of Kahului, Hawaii passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at Maui Memorial Hospital. Ted was born on July 23, 1949 in Concord, California to Ted and Dorothy (nee Bartholomew) Norton. The family soon moved to Midland, Michigan, where Ted was raised.

Ted was very athletic from childhood, quickly mastering the newly invented skateboard, the trampoline, waterskiing, golf and team sports. He was an expert pool player and avid fisherman. He developed an interest in jewelry making in high school, mentored by artist-teacher David Morrison, who said, “Ted learned jewelry casting and fabrication from me. He immediately took to the delicate, tricky job of silver soldering. He did nice work, and enjoyed it.”

Ted graduated from Midland High School in 1967, attending Delta College before moving with his parents to Honolulu, Hawaii, to join his sisters already living there. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Hawaii Manoa, majoring in sculpture.

He embarked on a successful career as a goldsmith, jewelry designer and fabricator, and was an expert in repair. He carved hundreds of original waxes for the lost wax process of making gold, silver and platinum jewelry. He set diamonds and all other precious stones with precision, and was known for his beautiful original creations. He had much repeat business in fine jewelry design.

Ted loved to surf and also became an accomplished skin diver and spear fisherman. He continued his love of pool playing (winning many trophies) and trampoline acrobatics, skating, bowling, etc. He practiced the martial art of Kung Fu and loved loud Taiko drums, firework shows, and Las Vegas, all reflections of his infectious enthusiasm for life.

Ted never had an unkind word for anyone. A great host, he enjoyed barbecuing and having friends over, often cooking his own ocean catch. Known for his generosity, laughter and kindness, he will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have him in their lives.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer (nee Corrales) Norton, with whom he shared 23 years; his children, Amanda (Kevin) Key, Anthony Norton and Shawn Newland; his grandchildren, Brandon Rogers, Autumn Hodges, Trinity Key, Dakota Key, Kaison Norton, Aleysia Norton, Winter Key, and Hunter Key; his sisters, Ruth (Birch) Robison and Marnie (Patrick) Weeks; his nephew, Abraham (Sarah) Robison; great-niece Amaryllis; cousins and friends.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic gathering restrictions, a celebration of Ted’s life will take place at a later time.
