Richard “Dick” Lowe, 76, of Kihei, HI passed away on September 6th, 2022.
Dick, father of three, lifelong entrepreneur and athlete, was born on December 26th, 1945 to Willis and Ruby Lowe in Portland, OR. The Lowe family later relocated to Brookings, OR where Dick was known as a four-sport athlete in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track for Brookings-Harbor High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Delores Ford and they went on to have three children, Cori, Cindy, and Chris. During that time, he also completed a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University). Dick, ever the entrepreneur, could often be found painting cars in his garage or playing for the State Farm team each summer in a men's softball league, his favorite pastime. Dick and Delores divorced in 1990.
After Hurricane Iniki devastated Kauai in 1992, Dick took a job with State Farm as an adjuster to help file claims for individual homeowners. Dick stayed on the island as a small business owner supporting the restoration of local homes when he met Cherie Moreland. Dick, always an athlete, had a love of golf, both teaching and building clubs that fit the player. Together he and Cherie started a golf club rental business. They later relocated with the business to Maui and operated that business from their home until his passing. Dick also worked as a Security Guard for Securitas and more recently with Mahi Pono, the agricultural company on Maui. Dick mentored the less experienced security personnel to help them establish good work ethic and a caring, considerate temperament in their duties. He was admired in the Maui community. Dick particularly enjoyed the Pukalani Golf Course and had many friends there. He brought his own brand of style and charm to activities there.
Dick is predeceased by his parents, Bud and Ruby Lowe. He is survived by his partner, Cherie Moreland, sister, Deanna (Lowe) Dirks; his three children, Cori Bergeron, Cindy Lowe and Chris Lowe; and his eleven grandchildren, James, Jordyn, Brody, Annika, Jaden, Drake, Aria, Lucian, Emma, Zoey and Odom.
There will be no formal services held, at Dick’s request. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, a nonprofit organization that his whole family is passionate about.
