Obituary for Mary Helen Kehaulani Lindsey

Mary Helen Kehaulani Lindsey was a true Lahaina soul born on March 16, 1941, in the Pioneer Mill Hospital, 900 Front Street.

She was the daughter of Lahaina Hawaiian leaders, Rose Pua Lindsey, affectionately known as "Aunty Pua", and Edwin “Ned” Lindsey Sr., Uncle Ned.

She had five siblings: Roselle F. K. Bailey (James M.); Edwin Robert Naleilehua Lindsey Jr. (Puanani); Charles Robert Lindsey (Elna); Leonard C. K. Lindsey; and Rose Marie Lindsey Duey (John).
She was pre-deceased by Leonard C.K. Lindsey and Edwin Robert Naleilehua Lindsey Jr.

She spent most of the years of her life living in the family home along the Lahaina shoreline at the south end of Front Street, where she passed away on January 13, 2023.

She was 81 years old.

Mary Helen led a full life. She was a student at King Kamehameha III Elementary School in downtown Lahaina, Kamehameha School on Oahu and Lahainaluna High School (Class of ’59). She attended Maunaolu Junior College in Paia.

She was integral in the renaissance of the Hawaiian Canoe Culture on the West Side for over 30 years and a power house paddler/steersperson for Lahaina Canoe Club in the 70’s. She progressed from racing to coaching to officiating, and always a mentor. She was also an active participant of Hui o Wa’a Kaulua, Maui’s first double hull canoe – Mo’olele.

Mary Helen didn’t just serve her community in canoe culture, she could also be found in the board rooms of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, preserving historic Lahaina as a director and later as president for a total of 22 years. She also served on the Maui Adult Day Care Center Board for 11 years.

Up the hill at Lahainaluna, after her mother retired as matron of the Boarder’s Dormitory in 1972, she was appointed in her place and served in that position until she retired in 1996.

Mary Helen then was her mother’s caregiver during the latter years of Aunty Pua’s life.
Mary Helen’s friends have fond memories. “She was a great friend. She took charge, and you could always rely on her.”

She was an active member of Holy Innocent’s Church and Waiola Church.
Her contributions to the Lahaina and Hawaiian communities will be missed.

Funeral Service will be held at Waiola Church Hall in Lahaina on January Sunday 22nd, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Service at 11:00 a.m.
