Obituary for Juliana Domingo Villanueva
With Great Sadness Our Beloved Nanang, Juliana Domingo Villanueva, 96 years old of Lahaina, Maui has peacefully passed away in Wailuku on September 23, 2020 surrounded by her family. She was born in Hanamaulu, Kauai on July 22, 1924 to the late Lucas and Lucila Domingo. She was the second eldest of her seven siblings (five of them were born in Kauai).
Born and raised in Kauai, Her parents were Sakadas from the Philippines. Her father worked in the sugarcane plantation. She attended elementary school up to the third grade. At the age of nine, her father became terminally ill, so the family moved back to the Philippines to fulfill her father’s last wish.
Growing up in the Philippines, she helped raise her younger siblings. She managed to attend vocational school and succeeded as a seamstress. She had her first child at the age of 19, amidst World War II. She packed up her infant and fled for the mountains by foot searching for safe shelter during the kamikaze invasion. They survived the war, and she went on to have 6 more children. After enduring the immense hardship and adversity during her younger years, she ventured out to find a better life for herself and for her children.
In 1969, Juliana migrated back to Hawaii and worked on Oahu, leaving her younger children and husband in the Philippines. She held multiple jobs with only a few hours of sleep, and was driven by a strong will of perseverance, lots of prayers and trust in the Lord.
Her family finally arrived in 1970. They settled on Maui with the help of her eldest son. She took on various jobs including a career as a seamstress/housekeeper at Maui Surf (which is Westin Maui today) and Kaanapali Shores Hotel. She worked until she was 83 years old before eventually retiring from that occupation.
In her late 80s and early 90s, she still managed to find her own way to go shopping, run errands, and visit her children and grandchildren around the island by utilizing the Maui Bus system and her personal taxi driver. She enjoyed traveling, her recent adventure was spending the holidays in the Philippines and greeting the new year. She was very independent, mobile, and lived her life with lots of vim & vigor even at the age of 96.
Her precious smile, laughter, and cheerful spirit will forever be etched in our hearts.
We honor the sacrifices she made, and the drive that she had for all of us to have a better life…She is greatly treasured for how she always cared for and nurtured those around her.
Thank you Nanang for the life you have given us, we will do our best to honor the values and virtues that you instilled in us….. We love you, we miss you and we will never forget you, for you are the heartbeat of our family.
Left to honor her legacy is her sister, Sofia Pascua, and 7 children: Loreto Enrique Jr. (Leonila), Aurelia Agbayani (Victor), Rosario Bartolome, Perfecta Ramos (Reynaldo), Emilio Villanueva (Lita), Carmelo Villanueva, and Rufino Villanueva (Emily). 18 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Avenido E. Villanueva; Siblings: Encarnacion Carlos, Federico Domingo, Quirino Domingo, Rita Fernando, Felipe Domingo Sr, son in law Pedro Bartolome, daughter-in-law Fely Enrique, grandson Joenard Bartolome, and granddaughter Ligaya Rabanal.
We would like to thank Maui Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, Haleakala East wing, Island Hospice, St. Anthony’s Church, Maria Lanakila Church, Norman’s Mortuary and Maui Memorial Park for assisting our family, & Mike’s loft for our dove release.
We are very grateful to the community, friends, relatives, and her co-workers for the love, respect, and support they have shown to our Nanang during her lifetime.
Celebration of Life will be held at Norman’s Mortuary with a private burial to follow.
Due to the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19, masks will be required to those attending the services and + practice social distancing.
