Obituary for Joseph Mililani Pana Jr.

Joseph Mililani Pana, Jr. "Papa Joe" "Uncle Moki" 87, passed away Friday, August 26, 2022 at Islands Hospice in Kahului. He was born on October 19, 1934 to Joseph Mililani Pana Sr. and Ellen Leilani Pana of Makawao.

He is predeceased by his wife, Betty Kekiwi Pana, his sister, Ethel Costa, and his parents. He is survived by son, Danroy "Kiwi" "Kaleo" Pana, son, Scott Tam, and hanai daughter, Mercelyn (Francis) Salvador.

He attended Maui High School (old campus) where he met his high school sweetheart and they eventually married. He served in the U.S. Marines and stationed in Korea.

He worked in construction in his early years. He was the founder of the Aloha House which he built in the 1970s and started it from his residence in Kahului. He had the help and the support of the community and some businesses. He worked for over 15 years at The Hawaii Job Corps, Maui campus. He also worked for Wackenhut and Securitas as a security guard at the Kahului airport from 2003-2010.

He was an avid football enthusiast. He enjoyed listening to music especially Hawaiian, classic oldies, and country. He enjoyed playing and serenading on his guitar or ukulele. He enjoyed meeting an array of different people in his lifetime always there to help if he was able, especially being a friend, giving an ear to listen, or giving a shoulder to cry on.

Mahalo to all that were a part of his life. Much mahalo to Keoki Robello at Hale Makua, Gloria and the staff at Islands Hospice, the caring staff at Maui Adult Day Care, Kahului, the staff and physicians at Maui Memorial Medical Center, Dr Rosario Guzman, Dr Ryan Smith and staff at Hawaii Heart Associates, Dr Birch and staff at Island Foot and Ankle Specialists and to all the physicians and therapist that improved the quality of his life.

He will be laid to rest at the Makawao Veterans Cemetery on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 1:00 PM
