Obituary for John Francis Hanhauser

John passed peacefully at his home in Kihei, Maui, Hawaii with his wife and God daughter at his bedside on October 31, 2023.

John was born August 4th, 1947, in Philadelphia PA to George J Hanhauser II and Marjorie M (McCaughn) Hanhauser and was the youngest of 3 children. He graduated from Brown School of Business at Bryant College in Rhode Island. John began his retail career at Macy’s in New York, focusing on home furnishings. In 1980, he switched from retail to wholesale when he became the Director of Sales and Marketing for a rug importer. There he developed products, designs, and marketing. It was at this time the John developed the first non-washable scatter rug program for the Domestic Industry.

In 1987, John and Terri created “House of Representatives,” a sales and design consulting firm. They traveled extensively, both domestic and internationally, to preview and present designs. During this time, John worked closely with European factories as well as the Far East with Oriental Weavers of Egypt. It was in 2002 that John was able to turn his attention to his second love and began his career in the wine business. John founded WW Shipping Solutions in Napa where he worked with wineries to develop distribution needs and coordinated fund-raising wine events for non-profits. In 2006, John became co-owner of Virgil’s Vineyard, a small boutique winery in Napa, with Matthew and Jennifer Kipper. Together they developed many award-winning wines.

John and Terri moved to Maui full time in 2008 when his health began to fail. The milder climate and magic of the island helped to extend his life by 15 years. John had a personality that was larger than life and had a heart to match. His greatest loves in life were his wife Terri, niece Karen, his many pets, and wine.

John is preceded in death by his father George J. Hanhauser II, his mother Marjorie M. Hanhauser, brother George J. Hanhauser III and sister Marjorie Zeliff.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Terriann Amels Hanhauser. Terri was the love of his life, best friend, and partner in everything. Together they shared many adventures around the world and through her his memory continues.

He is also survived by family members including George J. Hanhauser IV, his nephew of Frenchburg, KY, his wife Erin and children Kelly and Claire; Karen Ann (Hanhauser) Merson, his niece and Godchild of Dover, DE, her husband Michael and children Rachel, Zachary, and Rick; Gretchen M.
