Obituary for John Peter Finnegan

John (Jack) Finnegan 88 of Scottsdale Arizona passed away on May 18, 2022. Jack was born Sept 28, 1933, in New York City to Catherine (Kitty) & Peter Finnegan. He graduated Bryant High School and joined the Marines. He Served in Korea from 1952-1955 at the rank of Sergeant.
During one of his leaves from the Korean War while back home in New York, he met the love of his life Regina Mitchell at Rockaway Beach. A story he would reminisce about many times. They were ultimately married in September 1955 and shared 63 years of marriage.
John became a member of the NYPD while earning his bachelor’s degree in business at St John’s University. He ultimately spent 33 years in the NYPD achieving the highly respected first grade detective position until his retirement in 1986. Immediately following retirement, Jack & Regina ventured on a much-anticipated Hawaiian vacation to Maui. They both immediately fell in love with the islands and made a move from New York to retire in Hawaii where they lived for the next 37 years.
In Hawaii living the life of retirement, John decided to take a job at the Maui Marriott in Loss Prevention where he enjoyed 22 years of engagement with associates and guests. They fell in love with the Maui lifestyle of beautiful beaches, great seafood and the many friends they connected with. He loved sharing his many stories of his days in the NYPD with family, friends and anyone that would listen.
John will be terribly missed by his family, however, he always left great memories with his uncanny ability to be a great Irish storyteller as his life had many to tell. They always were a joy to listen and sometimes got better the second or third time through.
Regina passed away in 2018 and a few years later John moved to Scottsdale, AZ to be near his daughter Nancy.
John was survived by his daughters Nancy Scatena of Scottsdale AZ, Karen Bernhard of Elmhurst NY and son John Finnegan of North Salem NY along with 3 grandchildren Lauren Scatena, John Finnegan, and Kelsey Finnegan.
Funeral services will be held in Maui at Christ the King Church on Monday June 27 with visitations available at 10:15 am following a mass at 11:15 am. Burial will take place at the Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao as Jack will be buried next to his loving wife Regina.
