Avelina Ped Lucero, 90 of Kahului, Maui peacefully passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020. She was born in the Philippines on November 10, 1930 to the late Magno and Dominga Ped. She is predeceased by her husband, Bede Parinas Lucero, and her sisters, Feliciana Vega and Bonifacia Padua.
She is survived by her children: Cesar (Grace) Lucero, Edwin (Donna) Lucero, Jeannette Lucero and Lawrence Sr (Melody)Lucero; her grandchildren: Jasmine (Josh) Murray-Lucero, Brandon Lucero, Justin Lucero, Melia Lucero, Jeremy Lucero, Cheyanne (Cody) Rau, Lawrence Jr. Lucero, Sarah Lucero, Jason Alvarado and Maya Alvarado; her great grandson, Jaryk Murray-Lucero; and many nephews and nieces.
Persistence was a huge component of Avelina’s commitment to making the most of life. Avelina immigrated to Maui with her oldest son, Cesar, from the Philippines in 1960. Through Avelina’s efforts, her husband, his parents and siblings subsequently immigrated to Maui, followed by Avelina’s sister and other family members. Together with her husband, Bede, Avelina raised their three sons and a daughter. She guided her kids through life with a sense of humor, wisdom, and sacrifice, because those things were what encapsulated who she was. Most of you know that she was a housekeeper, but only a few of you are aware that she graduated from college with a teaching degree. In Maui, back then, someone with a teaching degree from the University of Pangasinan was not in high demand. Avelina worked tirelessly, retiring from the Royal Lahaina Hotel in 1997. When not spending time with her family and friends, Avelina enjoyed gardening, football and word searches. She was active in the Kahului Filipino community and supported her local political party by helping with fundraisers.
The family is grateful to the staff of Hospice Maui, Jimmy and Catalina Rabanes for the compassionate care Avelina received in her final days.
